Enhanced by Engineering
Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day
Every year on June 23rd, International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) gives us a chance to look back and celebrate the amazing achievements of women in this dynamic field. This year’s theme, “Enhanced by Engineering,” inspired us to showcase some incredible female leaders at E&A.
Each of these women has achieved great success in their careers and made significant contributions that pave the way for future engineers.Ā Dive in to learn more about their impactful stories.
Anna Grimes, PE, LEED, AP
Civil Engineering Department Manager
Anna Grimes has nearly 40 years of experience in the engineering industry. Her career began after she received an award from the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), which introduced her to the field. She attended California Polytechnic State University, where she was one of the few women in the engineering program. After graduation, Anna gained land development and engineering experience at many large and small companies. She has been a part of many local and international projects, helping develop parks, hospitals, military communities, and more.
Anna’s passion for her work stems from seeing how each project can enhance a community’s comfort. Over the years, she has had the opportunity to mentor many young professionals in the industry. She says that the development of their careers is one of her most significant accomplishments and that she still stays in touch with most of them today. Anna joined E&A in 2018 and now leads the civil engineering department, the largest division within the company.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind in engineering and your company?
“I hope my legacy shows through the people I have mentored and their growth. Everyone at E&A has something valuable to contribute no matter their position, and I want to help people realize that they are appreciated for what they bring.”
Betsy Purcell
Accounting Comptroller
At just 17, Betsy started her career in accounts payable at a printing company in Omaha. She spent the next decade working in various accounting positions while balancing work with night classes. After taking time off to raise her children, Betsy joined E&A, initially working under her predecessor. Eventually, she became head of the accounting department and now leads an all-female team.
She finds fulfillment in recognizing E&A’s projects around town and appreciates the similarities between the minds of accountants and engineers. Betsy expresses that E&A has given her and her family many opportunities and that the company has become an anchor for her. Additionally, she is active in the Metro Omaha Builders Association (MOBA), serving on the women’s committee.
How do you stay motivated and inspired in your role, even during challenging times?
“What my team and I do affects every person at E&A. I want what we do to positively impact each employee and help make things easier for them.”
Joan Green, PE
Transportation and Public Works Department Manager
Joan’s 41-year career in engineering began when she took a job in drafting while attending college. For the next five years, she gained experience and field knowledge until she transitioned to construction observation. for another five years, all while attending school and starting a family. In 1995, an opportunity in Civil Design came up, and Joan spent the next 20 years leading the design of many roadway and sewer projects for the city until she retired in 2014, when she took a brief hiatus.
Throughout her career, Joan encountered challenges and skepticism from her peers in the industry. Nevertheless, she consistently demonstrated her exceptional skills and competence, excelling in every role she undertook. Joan joined E&A in 2016 and is now leading the transportation department, inspiring her team to innovate and approach problems from new angles.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career in engineering?
“The most rewarding part of my career has been my children being able to witness my experiences of being in a non-traditional field. By overcoming obstacles, I have taught my kids to be independent, have strong work ethic, and never give anyone a reason to doubt them or their abilities.”
Nicolette Villwok, SPHR, SHRM-SCP
Human Resources Director
The guidance and support of female mentors has profoundly shaped Nicolette’s career. After graduating from Wayne State with a business degree, she started her career with the help of her mentor, who trained her in her first HR position. Over the years, Nicolette gained experience at various engineering and manufacturing companies, earning several HR certifications.
