Project Description
The overall goal of this project was to develop Lot 2 Springfield Business Park into storage units as part of the Springfield Business Park Development in Springfield, NE. Minor grading and tree clearing were necessary during the MBTA primary nesting season to accomplish this.
The area of investigation consisted of approximately 6.6 acres of dense vegetation and shrubs, along with a fencerow of large trees. Twelve inactive nests were observed. Five active nests were identified, including one Northern Cardinal nest, two American Robin nests, and two Mourning Dove nests. To meet the client’s schedule, E&A flagged the locations of the active nests and contacted the grading contractor at the end of the site visit to convey the areas that needed to be undisturbed and to provide the fledging timeframe for the observed species.
*Note: An avian nest survey must be conducted or supervised by a qualified biologist. Per Nebraska Game and Parks Commission recommendations, avian nest surveys should be completed no more than 5 days prior to the proposed tree or vegetation removal activities, but no more than 7 days can elapse under the MBTA. The MBTA is applicable year-round, but most migratory bird nesting in Nebraska takes place between April and September.
