The existing Pacific Street Bridge needed restoration and was missing much-needed pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes. The project presented some challenges during design and construction. At the north edge of the bridge, there was a high voltage powerline directly overhead that presented a challenge and detouring traffic during construction was not an option, as Pacific Street is a main arterial street.
Description
E&A developed a design that maintained traffic during construction, with east-west traffic limited to one lane in each direction. The footprint was expanded to the south to include a bicycle and pedestrian walkway. Badly corroded girder ends and abutment bearings were enhanced by replacing bearings, stripping and re-painting girders and by encasing their ends in concrete turndowns.
