Lancaster County Bridges

Lancaster County, NE

The goal of this project was to replace three bridges damaged by flooding. Bridge S179 was located within a Civil Works program project area and required extra permitting and correspondence compared to a normal project of this type.

Description

As part of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, a wetland delineation is required for developments/projects to determine if wetlands or Waters of the United States will be impacted by the proposed project. E&A conducted wetland delineations at three bridges south of Lincoln that were to be replaced with box culverts. Bridge R210 was found to have 0.021 acres of wetlands and jurisdictional streams were present at all three bridges. Nationwide Permits were obtained for all of the bridges. Bridge S179 required an additional Section 408 permit because it would alter a Civil Works program project area. Section 408 provides that the USACE may allow another party to alter a Civil Works project if it is determined that the alteration will not be injurious to the public interest and will not impair the usefulness of the Civil Works project.
